The Historical Novel Society First Chapters Competition is a major new writing competition for excellence in historical fiction for the first three chapters of an unpublished novel. First prize is £1,000. Nine Category Winner Awards for £500 each. In its first year, the competition received over 400 high-calibre entries.

The nine Category Winners are announced today. Huge congratulations to you all.



We would also like to recognise the excellent work of
Round 1 and Round 2 of the competition were assessed by Historical Novels Review book editors and reviewers. Huge thanks to the competition judges and the immensely hardworking competition coordinator, Rebekah Simmers.
The final prize will be judged by internationally renowned authors, Kate Quinn and Jane Johnson and agent and publisher, Lisa Highton.
The overall competition winner will be announced on 7 September at the gala dinner at Dartington Great Hall during the HNS 2024 UK conference.
